Ponting was devastating as he hit five sixes and eight fours in his 55-ball innings to help Australia reach 5 for 214 from its allotted 50 overs.
In reply, New Zealand were dismissed for 170, Michael Kasprowicz doing most of the damage with the ball as he returned the figures of 4 for 29 from his four overs.
Scott Styris provided stoic resistance for the Black Caps, making an impressive 66 from 38 balls.
Tonight's fixture is a warm-up to the five-match one-day series beginning on Saturday in Wellington.
