Way back in 1981, when the New Zealand side were running around in the now infamous beige and chocolate coloured one-day uniforms, sporting wacky hair styles and facial hair, there was a particular incident at the MCG which has since become an annual topic of conversation whenever the two countries meet at a cricketing venue.
It was of course that night that the Chappell brothers decided to bowl and under-arm delivery to New Zealand batsman Brian McKechnie, who needed to hit the last all of the match for six in order to win.
Debate has raged over the incident, which led to the style of delivery to be outlawed from the game, and it remains a sore point for New Zealanders to this day.
As Australia was closing in on victory at Thursday night's exhibition match, seam bowler Glenn McGrath gestured to replay the incident some 24 years on from the original incident.
He pretended to bend over and under-arm the final ball of the match to Kyle Mills much to the roar of the 29,000 strong crowd.
Umpire Billy Bowden, in his flamboyant manner then showed McGrath a red card before the paceman went back to his full run-up and completed the final ball - where Mills was caught in the deep.
Australian captain Ricky Ponting told reporters following the match that McGrath had intended to complete the act from the beginning of the final over.
"He said to me at the beginning of the over that he wanted to do it and I said no," Ponting explained.
"He said to me after the fourth ball, could he do it and I said no again but he twisted my arm for the last ball.
"It was all a bit of light-hearted fun.
"We sort of worked Billy [Bowden] up little bit to have a play around with it as well.
"I am not sure if the crowd enjoyed it or hated it but I heard a few interesting calls coming from the crowd."
