Khan opts out of South Africa series

Zaheer Khan will miss India's Test series against South Africa but has agreed to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Bangalore.

The 29-year-old paceman has not played for his country since the first Test against Australia in Melbourne in December due to an ankle injury.

He has undergone a significant rehabilitation period, including time at the Johannesburg sports medicine centre since.

But the seamer insists he is still not fully fit and will play in the inaugural IPL tournament instead.

"I feel I am not yet ready for international cricket," the left-arm seamer said. "I have started bowling but I have been asked by doctors not to push it.

"One of the reasons I am not ready for Test matches is because I have to bowl 30-35 overs across five days. Doctors have advised me to start with one-dayers and club games."

India are scheduled to take on the Proteas in three Tests from March 26 to April 15, with the IPL Twenty20 competition to start from April 18.
