Australia captain Ricky Ponting says Twenty20 cricket is useful at getting people interested in the game but is against a World Cup.
The 30-year-old was speaking after his rusty looking side crashed to a 100-run defeat against England at The Rose Bowl on Monday evening, after being bowled out for a paltry 79 inside 15 overs.
Despite acknowledging the format has helped bolster attendances at cricket grounds, Ponting does not feel there is a place for it as a far as a mini-World Cup is concerned.
He said: "I think we will play a few more of these games around the world. It has been great for the game over here in England. When I played one for Somerset last season we had a full house and it's done a lot for the game over here. It's a good game for the fans.
"I don't think see it becoming a Twenty20 World Cup. I think it is better being played as a fun, more light-hearted sort of game. That's my opinion. I don't think it should be taken that seriously.
"I think it has got a role in cricket. Whether that is at international level or not, I'm not sure. The game attracts different audiences and different crowds.
