Toronto Twenty20 event called off

The proposed four-nation Twenty20 tournament in Toronto, featuring Pakistan, Bangladesh, West Indies and Canada, has been called off.

Although chief organiser Hasan Jalil said an official decision to postpone the event has not been taken as yet, sources in the PCB confirmed to PTI that the tournament planned from August 14 to 17 has been called off.

"The biggest problem is the ground, Toronto does not have a proper stadium... It's a flat ground and we had to erect a lot of facilities there. So when West Indies inspected the ground they were not satisfied," Jalil said.

"They had set some conditions... Because of these conditions it is a very risky affair now as just two weeks are left and there is no MOU signed with West Indies so we are in a limbo right now," he said.

"Overall the boards have been supporting us. We signed MOU's with PCB, Canada cricket board, Bangladesh cricket board.... So hopefully if there is a change we will re-schedule most likely after the Champions Trophy," he said.

Jalil also said the organisers were now hoping to rope in Sri Lanka as the fourth team.

The postponement of this Twenty20 tournament means the Pakistan team now only have a planned three match one-day series at home against New Zealand before the Champions Trophy in September.

However, the New Zealand tour is also in limbo due to the security issues being raised by teams over playing in Pakistan.
