England - which has a thriving county Twenty20 scene - and Australia - which next summer will introduce a state Twenty20 competition - are the leading proponents of the game.
However International Cricket Council chief Malcolm Speed says other nations are less enthused about Twenty20 and the prospect of a World Cup or any type of international cup would be put on ice for at least 12 months.
"There has been no discussion yet of a Twenty20 World Cup," Speed said at the conclusion's of this week's ICC executive board meeting.
"Some countries are less enthusiastic.
"We're very happy with the progress its making at domestic level, we're very happy to see it played between countries on a selective basis.
"We haven't got to the stage where we are seriously considering putting an international event onto the calendar.
"But that's something that will be reviewed over the next 12 months.
