Former Pakistan test skipper Shoaib Malik will stand in as Pakistan's Twenty20 leader during Fridays Twenty20 international against Australia at the MCG.
The Pakistan Cricket Board made the announcement on Monday morning releasing a brief statement which said "Shoaib Malik has been appointed captain for the Twenty-20 match against Australia in the absence of Shahid Afridi".
The all rounder will replace Shahid Afridi who was banned from Pakistan's next two games after being caught biting the ball during the fifth ODI in Perth which Pakistan lost by two wickets.
After reviewing television evidence match referee Ranjan Madugalle hit Afridi with a two game ban which rules him out of Fridays game. Afridi will also miss Pakistan's Twenty20 game against England in Dubai on February 19th.
In a press release from the ICC Madugalle said "I imposed the maximum penalty under the code to Shahid and reminded him of his responsibilities as a national captain which is to ensure that the match is played according to the laws of the game and in the spirit in which it is intended to be played."
