Australia's team for Monday's historic Twenty-20 match against South Africa will include "Mr Cricket" and the bizarrely-named "Catfish".

"For the first time, the Australian team will be sporting nicknames as well as a brand new strip, specifically produced for the historic match," Cricket Australia announced on Friday ahead of the Gabba match, which will be the first Twenty-20 international played in Australia.

Queensland all-rounder James Hopes has the bizarre nickname of Catfish while West Australia's Mike Hussey has earned himself the impressive title of Mr Cricket.

Captain Ricky Ponting will be known as Punter and Andrew Symonds is Roy.

Not all the monikers are too creative, however, with Damien Martyn to go around as Marto and Nathan Bracken as Bracks.

All 12 players in Australia's team will wear their nicknames on their backs for the match, including captain Ricky Ponting (Punter), dashing young NSW batsman Michael Clarke (Pup) and NSW paceman Stuart Clark, who is known to his mates as Sarfraz.

Team: Ricky Ponting (Punter), Brad Haddin (BJ), Damien Martyn (Marto), Mike Hussey (Mr Cricket), Mick Lewis (Billy), Andrew Symonds (Roy), Michael Clarke (Pup), Stuart Clark (Sarfraz), Simon Katich (Kat), James Hopes (Catfish), Nathan Bracken (Bracks), Mitchell Johnson (Midge).
