Damien Martyn and Andrew Symonds thrilled the Gabba crowd with a blistering attack on South Africa's bowlers as the hosts set the Proteas 210 to win the Twenty20 international in Brisbane.
Martyn made 96 from just 56 balls to give Australia a solid platform and Symonds blasted an unbeaten 26-ball 54 as the Proteas attack struggled to make a breakthrough although they were not helped by a string of dropped catches.
Opener James Hopes made 17 before edging a Shaun Pollock delivery to Jacques Kallis at first slip.
In-form Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting hit two sixes in a rapid 27 before one big shot too many saw him hammer spinner Johan Botha to Pollock at wide long on.
That brought Symonds to the wicket and he and Martyn put on 84 in just 6.5 overs for the third wicket.
