Mendis orchestrates spectacular Aussie collapse

Ajantha Mendis picked up six wickets to help Sri Lanka secure a eight run victory over Australia despite a quick fire half century from Shane Watson as the hosts sealed a 2-0 series victory.

Mendis (6-17) recorded the best ever figures in a t20 International, and the 5th overall to help Sri Lankan fight their way back into the game after they had been restricted to a total of just 157-9.

Faced with a run chase of 158, Australia got off to a flying start thanks to Shane Watson who smashed an incredible 20 ball half century to put the visitors in control of the game.

The opener smashed six boundaries and five sixes during an opening stand of 71 with David Warner (16) but once he was dismissed by Ajantha Mendis at the end of the 6th over, Australia collapsed in spectacular fashion.

Warner quickly followed thanks to a stunning piece of fielding from Angelo Matthews who took a tricky catch out on the midwicket boundary before throwing the ball 30 metres to Mahela Jayawardene to complete the dismissal as he sailed over the boundary.

The opener remained at the crease but TV replays clearly showed Matthews was in the air as he tossed the ball to Jayawardene before his feet touched the ground.

With Australia’s big hitters back in the dugout Mendis tore through the victors middle order in spectacle fashion as the Aussies lost wicket at regular intervals to slip to 149-9 despite reaching 71-0 in the 6th over.

Although Mendis’ heroics sealed the victory, the groundwork was done by Jayawardene who held the hosts innings together with a vital innings of 86 after Sri Lanka’s top order failed to fire.

Jayawardene smashed twelve boundaries and a six after opening partner, and centurion in their previous game Tillakaratne Dilshan (4), was trapped LBW by Brett Lee (3-39) in the 3rd over.
