Paul Collingwood lifted England's spirits with a four-wicket display in tonight's Twenty20 international against Sri Lanka after they suffered another injury crisis at the Rose Bowl.
The Durham all-rounder claimed four for 22 as England dismissed Sri Lanka for 163 in their 20 overs despite a flying start from the tourists, who raced to 68 without loss in only seven overs.
Collingwood's figures overhauled Jon Lewis' four for 24 recorded during last year's inaugural Twenty20 international against Australia and gave England a timely boost after another day marred by injuries.
Already without Michael Vaughan (knee), Andrew Flintoff (ankle), Simon Jones (knee), James Anderson (back) and Ashley Giles (hip), they were joined on the casualty list by new boys Glen Chapple and Ed Joyce.
Chapple had been ruled out earlier in the day with the abdominal strain he suffered during his debut against Ireland at Belfast on Tuesday, which has prompted the selectors to recall Worcestershire's Kabir Ali to the squad.
But a more sickening blow was the injury sustained by Middlesex batsman Joyce, who suffered a suspected broken right ankle in only the second over of day.
Running around from third man to try and catch an upper cut from Sanath Jayasuriya, Joyce stumbled as he attempted to take the catch and immediately collapsed clutching his ankle.
He immediately called for assistance and, after a 12-minute delay, he was taken off to hospital in an ambulance with a suspected broken ankle which would almost certainly rule him out for the remainder of the season.
Joyce's sickening injury followed just two days after making an emotional debut against Ireland at Belfast in front of his family having spent three years qualifying for England.
But while there was no let-up in England's injury misery, at least Collingwood lifted their spirits with a stunning display to halt Sri Lanka's momentum.
Jayasuriya and fellow opener Upul Tharanga had given the tourists a flying start until Collingwood was introduced in the eighth over and struck with his fifth ball when Tharanga played on after hitting 34 off only 25 balls.
That dismissal sparked Sri Lanka's collapse with captain Mahela Jayawardene being run out by substitute Ian Bell in the next over backing up too far down the wicket.
After those two quick wickets England successfully strangled Sri Lanka's run-flow by teaming Collingwood up with Middlesex spinner Jamie Dalrymple as Sri Lanka lost four wickets in as many overs.
Jayasuriya, who had hit four fours and two sixes in his race to 41 off 30 balls, was unluckily given leg before in the next over to an attempted yorker which appeared to be missing leg stump, then Tillekeratne Dilshan was caught behind off Dalrymple.
But it was Collingwood who really halted Sri Lanka's momentum by claiming two key scalps in successive overs, bowling Russel Arnold as he advanced down the pitch and then inducing Kumar Sangakkara into a chip to extra cover.
Chamara Kapugedera briefly lifted Sri Lanka's spirits with a hard-hitting 22 off 16 balls, but two further wickets in the final two overs ensured Sri Lanka's total did not get out of reach.
