Southee steers Knights to five run win

Over 5000 fans squeezed into the Mount Maunganui stadium to watch the Northern Knights beat the Auckland Aces by 5 runs to win the first of this years HRV Cup games.

Tim Southee stated with the ball for the Knights, bowling the last over with the Aces needing just 11 runs Southee bowled six perfect yorkers to restrict the Aces and hand victory to the Knights.

Chasing 165 for the win Aces captain Gareth Hopkins got them within touching distants smashing 50 off 33 balls but he was dismissed in the 18th over to put the Knights in the driving seat.

Earlier, Daniel Vettori, opening for the Knights smashed 43 runs from 22 balls in a first wicket stand of 61 runs with BJ Watling.
