Jacob Oram took five wickets top help the Central Stags beat the Otago Volts by one run at Pukekura Park in New Plymouth.
Defending a low target of just 116 Oram ripped through the Stags middle order picking up 5 wickets, he conceded just 14 runs to leave last years champs one run short.
The Volts were well placed to seal the win but after Oram's burst they needed 12 runs off the last over, Ian Butler scored 8 of the runs needed by they failed to reach the required 116.
The victory for the Stags was set up by Ross Taylor who smashed 40 runs from just 19 balls earlier in the day. While wickets fell around him Taylor stayed at the crease long enough to give the Stags bowlers a defendable total.
