A rollicking half-century from Brendon McCullum propelled Canterbury to a six-wicket win in the inaugural Twenty20 cricket final against Auckland.
Canterbury Wizards claimed the first Twenty20 title with a six-wicket victory over Auckland Aces at Eden Park.
Brendon McCullum struck a dynamic 62 from only 22 balls before Nathan Astle took the baton and made 74 as Canterbury made 180 target in 17.2 overs.
Auckland got off to a flyer, with openers Lou Vincent and Paul Hitchcock making merry on home soil.
However, after a 50 partnership Vincent went for 36 from 18 balls after mis-hitting a hook back over his head into the hands of a charging McCullum.
Aces captain Richard Jones made only four runs before succumbing to Chris Harris.
But Scott Styris and Paul Hitchcock put on 53 for the third wicket – the latter falling to Nathan Astle, caught on the hoof by Shane Bond.
Styris was in big hitting form, making 62 – off only 31 balls including four fours and five sixes.
However, Rob Nicol could not repeat his heroics from a week earlier, making 19 and the momentum slowed.
Having looked likely to make 200, the hosts settled for 179 for seven from their 20 overs at the crease.
But Canterbury were even quicker out of the blocks, hitting over 17 per over from their first four.
Brendon McCullum led the charge with 62 - including six sixes - before falling with the last ball of the fifth over, hitting Hitchcock’s delivery to Mayu Pasupati.
Craig McMillan came to the crease with the score on 80, and added 36 in a 71-run second-wicket stand with Astle before falling to Kyle Mills, Pasupati taking the catch at mid-wicket.
Chris Cairns joined Astle in the middle and the veterans guided their side on, putting on 27 before Auckland launched a late revival.
Vincent ran out Astle in the 17th over with a fine piece of fielding at cover, before Peter Fulton was taken first ball, wicketkeeper Reece Young catching him out from a short-pitched Scott Styris delivery.
However, Canterbury passed the finishing line courtesy of a Styris no-ball and a Harris single with 16 balls to spare.
The victory set the Wizards up nicely for the Shield final on home soil next week and also earned a rare double of Twenty20 titles in two nations for their South African coach Dave Nosworthy.
