Warriors claim first win of season

The Fidentia Warriors won their first game of the 2007 Standard Bank Pro 20 series with a five-wicket victory over the Nashua Titans at Sahara Oval St Georges on Friday.

HD Ackerman struck the winning runs with the penultimate ball of the match as the hosts reached their target of 132 runs. The Warriors needed 10 off the final over and Ackerman ended on 37 not out from 33 balls while earlier opening bat Justin Kreusch scored 36 off 39 balls.

But the foundation for the victory was set by a tidy bowling and fielding effort, spearheaded by spinner Arno Jacobs who claimed three for 17 in his four overs.

Left-arm seamer Lonwabo Tsotsobe and off-spinner Johan Botha assisted Jacobs as they grabbed two wickets each.

The Titans won the toss and chose to bat, which proved to be a poor decision as they slumped to 78 for six at one stage.

The first boundary of the innings only arrived in the fifth over when Gulam Bodiís thick inside edge narrowly missed his stumps and beat diving wicketkeeper Attie Dyili.

The Titans could not put any meaningful partnerships together and only a 40-run stand seventh wicket between Alfonso Thomas and Heino Kuhn allowed the visitors to reach a modest total.

Kuhn top-scored for the visitors with 37 off only 20 balls, including three boundaries and two sixes. He holed out to long-on with the final ball of the innings after hitting the previous Jacobs delivery for six.

Their partnership ended when Thomas was bowled around his legs for 27 while attempting a reverse sweep off Johan Botha.

Bodi added 27 at the top of the order but otherwise the Titans never managed to come to grips with the slow pitch.

The Warriors began the run chase in controlled fashion with Zander de Bruyn and Kreusch putting on 23 for the first wicket.

De Bruyn was bowled for seven with a beauty from Thomas and Jacobs followed soon shortly after when Albie Morkel uprooted his leg stump with his score on five.

But Kreusch and Ackerman settled nerves with 41-run third wicket stand that was enough to see the Warriors home.
