The Nashua Cape Cobras and the Highveld Lions have rushed to the top of the Standard Bank Pro20 log and will be looking to seal home semifinals when they clash with the two bottom sides in the standings on Friday.
The Lions are unbeaten, courtesy of two last-ball victories and a Duckworth/Lewis-assisted win, but will face a fierce challenge from neighbours the Nashua Titans at the Wanderers.
The Titans, one of the favourites for the title, have been strangely out-of-sorts so far in the competition, having lost two of their three games and coach Richard Pybus says they have to find their form quickly, starting with Friday's derby.
"It's been a very modest campaign so far and we haven't played nearly as well as we can. We need to win both our remaining games to make sure we don't leave anything to chance in terms of the semi-finals and that means our combinations have to click. We've been a bit slow out of the blocks after playing so wonderfully well in the SuperSport Series and we need to make good starts with bat and ball," Pybus said.
The Lions produced their best performance so far in beating the defending champions, the Gestetner Diamond Eagles, in a rain-affected match in Potchefstroom last weekend and coach Gordon Parsons is looking to build on that form.
"In the first two games we did one or two things wrong and I'm getting too old for last-ball victories!
"But we bowled beautifully in Potchefstroom and we're looking for an even better performance, with the same 12, on Friday," Parsons said.
The Cape Cobras travel to Durban to play the Nashua Dolphins, with the home side looking to rein in the visitors' in-form batting line-up. The Cobras lashed 212 runs, the second highest total in Standard Bank Pro20 history, against the Titans in Cape Town in midweek.
"I watched it and it was a pretty good performance by the Cobras," Dolphins coach Yashin Ebrahim said. "They've got an awesome batting line-up and we have to find a way of stemming that run-machine. The key thing is to take wickets at regular intervals."
The Dolphins will be forced to make at least one change, with all-rounder Jon Kent out injured. Paceman Andrew Tweedie has been brought into the squad, but Ebrahim believes the Dolphins have the players to upstage the high-flying Cobras.
"I was quite happy with most of our performance against the Lions, but we let ourselves down by only scoring 24 runs in the last four overs and then we should have defended our total when we had the Lions 36 for four.
"But Dale Benkenstein and Hashim Amla are back and Doug Watson showed against the Lions that he can play Pro20. Lance Klusener is, of course, a matchwinner and Yusuf Abdullah has been bowling superbly with the white ball," Ebrahim said.
