The Lions secured a Standard Bank Pro 20 home semi final by beating the Nashua Titans by seven wickets at Liberty Life Wanderers on Friday.
The home team successfully chased down a target of 175 with 14 balls to spare thanks to 68 not out from opener Blake Snijman and a feisty 51 from Vaughn van Jaarsveld.
The pair put on 89 for the third wicket to the delight of the 21000 crowd, a Pro 20 record. The supporters included hundreds of King Edward prep school boys as part of their centenary celebrations, and they were delighted with the display of the two former KES boys.
After winning the toss the Lions chose to field. The Titans scored a mediocre 174 for five despite a belligerent 68 from Heino Kuhn.
But it was the two Lions youngsters who stole the show as the home team won their fourth successive match and remained the only unbeaten team in the competition.
Snijman continued his good form on his way to his runs which were scored off 49 balls with eight fours and two sixes. Van Jaarsveld’s runs came off 31 balls with two fours and four sixes.
The match saw a record 22 sixes hit, including three in a row by Justin Ontong off the slow left-arm of Aaron Phangiso.
Earlier Titans batsmen Kuhn and opener Gulam Bodi (50) put on a record 109 for the second wicket, surpassing the previous record of 98 set by the Cobras’ Andrew Puttick and Vernon Philander.
Kuhn, who only scored three off his first 13 balls, rode his luck having been dropped twice in the same Eugene Moleon over by Gerhard de Bruin. In all the Lions dropped four straightforward catches.
Kuhn’s runs came off only 40 balls and included six fours and five sixes. He eventually holed out to deep square leg where Blake Snijman took a comfortable catch off the medium pace of Tyrone Henderson.
Moleon gained some measure of revenge by taking the wickets of Bodi and Martin van Jaarsveld (0) with consecutive delivers in his third over to finish with two for 24.
Lions right-arm seamer Garnett Kruger took one for 12 in his fours overs while the unfortunate Gerhard de Bruin disappeared for 55 runs in three overs – the second worst in the competitions’ history.
