The Warriors have a straightforward task ahead of them when they play the Highveld Lions in the final Standard Bank Pro20 Series cricket fixture in East London tomorrow – they must win to reach the semi-finals.
With several results having gone in their favour, notably the losses by the Titans on Friday and the Dolphins, Zander de Bruyn‘s Warriors now hold their destiny in their own hands in the final round of the league phase.
A win against the unbeaten Lions will take the Warriors ahead of the Diamond Eagles, who have nine points, and the losers of the other game tomorrow, the Titans versus the Dolphins in Benoni.
Going into tomorrow‘s round, the Warriors and the Dolphins each have six points and the Titans have four.
Wins for the Warriors and the Dolphins will see them join the Lions and the Cape Cobras – who have both already qualified – in the last four. If the Warriors lose and the Dolphins win, the Diamond Eagles and the Dolphins will go through, while a Warriors loss coupled with a Titans victory will see the Titans and the Eagles advance.
The Warriors may benefit from the fact that the Lions have already qualified for a home semi-final and may not be as charged up for their final clash.
On the other hand, they have nothing to lose and a relaxed frame of mind could see them produce their best cricket. Either way, the Warriors, with just one win under their belts and also a no result, will have to show nerves of steel as they target a semi- final berth.
The Lions have a dangerous batting line-up and even if the slower East London pitch is not entirely suited to their forceful strokeplay, they remain a tough combination who will be difficult to topple. Their winning run will have inspired confidence to chase any target down.
