The Lions registered an emphatic six-wicket victory over Western Province-Boland in their Standard Bank Pro20 match at the Wanderers on Friday, thanks mainly to a splendid 64 by Vaughn van Jaarsveld.
Chasing a target of 130 to win, the Lions made 134 for four, with six balls in hand.
Western Province-Boland won the toss and batted first. Their 100 came up off 75 deliveries, and they were looking good, but lost wickets at regular intervals. JP Duminy was top scorer, with 43 off 58 balls, and captain Thami Tsolekile made 35.
David Terbrugge was the main destroyer, taking four wickets for 20 in three overs and three balls. Western Province-Boland were all out for 129 in the 19th over.
Despite losing the early wicket of Matthew Harris (3), the Lions were never in trouble. Van Jaarsveld and Johan Otto had a third wicket partnership of 79, which ended when Otto was given out lbw to William Hantam for 31.
Van Jaarsveld was out shortly before the end, when he was bowled by Rory Kleinveldt, but skipper Neil McKenzie made sure of his team's victory, hitting a massive six off Hantam to bring up the winning runs with the last ball of the 19th over.
