WP-Boland captain Thami Tsolekile guided his team to an ultimately comfortable, five-wicket victory against a weak Eastern Cape Warriors team in their Pro-20 match at Newlands on Sunday afternoon.
The Warriors crashed to a miserable 114 all out on a blameless pitch and had number three Arno Jacobs to thank for avoiding complete humiliation with a controlled and aggressive innings of 45 from 41 deliveries with six fours and one six but there was little in the way of support for the powerful left hander.
Required to score at less than six runs per over from the start, the home side seemed unable to pace their innings and never struck the required balance between boundary-hitting and gentle accumulation of runs.
Tyron Henderson removed openers Andrew Puttick (13) and Darren Bassage (6) in an opening spell of 4-1-8-2 and the home side looked in genuine trouble at 43-3 with the required rate racing towards eight runs an over.
J-P Duminy needed 40 deliveries to reach 24 but, just when it seemed he would never start timing the ball, he launched a brace of sixes over midwicket against Robin Peterson and suddenly the situation was back under control. Duminy was finally caught at deep midwicket for 47 from just 46 balls with three fours and the two sixes.
But it was Tsolekile who clinched the victory in the 19th over when he struck Peterson for three legside boundaries and collected all 16 runs that were required for the win.
Earlier Rory Klenveldt produced a magnificent spell of bowling with the new ball to undermine the ECC innings almost before it had begun removing openers Justin Kreusch (5) and Robin Peterson (6) courtesy of slip catches by Duminy and Andrew Puttick.
But it was his stunning, one-handed return catch to send back danger man Henderson (2) that turned the game the home team's way.
William Hantam (3-25) also benefitted from bowling straight and full - all three of his wickets were clean bowled - while Quinton Friend, Duminy and Renier Munnik all collected a wicket each.
