Langers hat-trick sinks Titans

A thrilling hat-trick by Charl Langeveldt was all that was required to see the Nashua Cape Cobras to a 60-run win over the Easterns Titans in their Standard Bank Pro20 match at SuperSport Park.

Langeveldt, who seems to have amped up his bowling after his controversial time a couple of weeks back, bowled Roelof van der Merwe and Faf du Plessis and had Farhaan Behardien caught behind in his second over to tear through the Titans top-order.

Much like South Africa's fast bowling sensation of the season, Dale Steyn, Langeveldt swung the ball away at pace and even the home crowd were warmly appreciative of the efforts of one of the country's most popular cricketers.

Langeveldt's burst left the Titans reeling on nine for four and that was pretty much the tale of the innings with the home side's hopes buried there and then.

Albie Morkel did play some glorious strokes in his 28 and Heino Kuhn made a run-a-ball 24, but both lived and died by the sword as the Titans innings ended on 105 all out.

Langeveldt finished with three for 19 and spinner Con de Lange and seamer Vernon Philander each picked up a couple of wickets at the death.

Earlier, a telling third-wicket stand between Andrew Puttick and Henry Davids carried the Cape Cobras to 165 for five.

Most of the Cobras runs would come in the classy stand of 91 off just 66 balls between Puttick and Davids, which came straight after the visitors' innings had been marred by two wickets in an over by Ethy Mbhalati.

One of them was that of Herschelle Gibbs, who did not bother to build an innings, swung at and missed a few deliveries, and then edged a rash (for the second time in a week!) drive to gully to be dismissed for a duck.

Opener Richard Levi (11) had been sent back to the dugout five balls earlier, but he was unfortunate as a pull came right out of the screws, but straight to Aaron Phangiso at deep square-leg.

Davids was in full cry almost from the start of his innings, winging his way to a 38-ball half-century with four fours and a six, which soared gloriously over Mbhalati's head after he had come down the pitch and driven on the up.

The pair certainly had the Titans under the cosh before Puttick, who went smoothly to 59 off 44 balls, top-edged a cut to short third-man, Jaco Booysen diving forward to take a good catch off leg-spinner Du Plessis. The same fielder could have terminated Davids' innings on 14 when he dropped a sitter at midwicket off Morkel.

Davids was caught off the impressive but unlucky Nel, trying a paddle-sweep, for 57 off 41 balls and the Cobras innings rather died away thereafter.
