The 2005 Standard Bank Pro20 series really took off in Benoni and Potchefstroom on Sunday when the records came tumbling down.
The first century (Loots Bosman, 104) for the Eagles against the Lions, the highest team total, the Eagles' 225, and the first match in which both teams bettered a score of 200 runs (Dolphins. 200-4 and Titans 203-5) enhanced the prestige and popularity of this format of the game tremendously.
Willowmoore Park in Benoni was jam-packed which proved that the support for this format has spread like wildfire.
Games like those on Sunday get people talking and the attendance record of 18 221 may well be passed on Friday night at the Wanderers when the Lions and the Titans clash.
The record was set on the same field last year when the Dolphins played the home team.
"Hopefully the remarkable popularity of this form of cricket will also act as an injection for the other formats," said Titans coach Dave Nosworthy.
"No-one can argue against the popularity of Pro20 cricket being one of the greatest success stories of cricket. It was a wonderful experience to attend a game like the one in Benoni. It was a perfect pitch on which batsmen could execute their strokes with great confidence. That is what it is all about and it is what the spectators want to see."
Nosworthy, whose team is second on the log, but has played one match less than the log leaders (the Eagles) says they are not going to lose perspective." The coach referred to the Justin Kemp innings of an unbeaten 85 off only 39 balls. "It was controlled hitting of those balls that could be hit. That is how he has changed.
"When he was young and inexperienced he wanted to hit every ball. Bow he is much more selective and he knows which deliveries can be hit. He is a very special player," Nosworthy said.
