Nashua Western Province Boland kept their hopes of a semi final place alive in the Standard Bank Pro20 competition with a resounding 86-run victory over the Nashua Dolphins at Sahara Kingsmead on Friday evening.
WP Boland opener Andrew Puttick blasted a magnificent 86 from just 62 deliveries to guide his team to a competitive total of 174-4 from the 20 overs in a crucial match which the visitors had to win to stay alive in the competition and swing bowler Charl Willoughby produced the best figures ever recorded in the competition to ensure an overwhelming victory.
Willoughby, swinging the ball both ways at will, finished with the remarkable analysis of 4-1-9-4 after a third over that earned him three wickets without a run being scored - a triple wicket maiden.
Paul Adams gleefully wrapped the innings up with 3-19 from 3.3 overs as the desperate Dolphins tailenders slogged hopelessly in pursuit of 20 runs per over.
Earlier Puttick employed 'old-fashioned' tactics at the start of his innings in which he left several early deliveries alone in a form of the game in which most batsmen play at everything.
But the laid back left hander soon made up for lost time belting ten fours and a brace of sixes in an innings which may even have reached three figures had a clever throw from the deep by Shaun Pollock not run him out with 22 deliveries of the innings remaining.
Vernon Philander, who was only drafted into the XI at the last minute when Rory Kleinveldt injured himself during the pre-match warm-up, contributed a valuable 40 as a pinch-hitter during a second wicket stand of 60 while JP Duminy made 19 not out from just 11 balls at the close proving that good batsmen can score at a decent pace in any form of the game.
Despite their impressive victory against the woeful Dolphins, who finished winless in their five matches, WP Boland are still likely to need victory against the Nashua Titans in their final game at Newlands on Sunday to ensure themselves a place in the semi finals.
