Eagles and Warriors game washed out

Rain washed out the Gestetner Diamond Eagles innings in the Standard Bank Pro20 semifinal second leg against the Chevrolet Warriors at Sahara Oval St George's in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.

The Eagles were two without loss after 1.2 overs, chasing 118 for victory and a place in the final as well as a lucrative journey to the IPL Champions League. The match will now start afresh on Monday night.

CJ de Villiers had earlier announced himself as one of the brightest young fast bowling prospects in the country as he restricted the Warriors to 117 for eight.

De Villiers's outstanding haul of four for 14 ensured the Eagles dominated the Warriors batsmen throughout after the Gestetner Diamond Eagles won the toss and backed themselves to chase as they sent the Chevrolet Warriors in to bat.

Ashwell Prince is not the first batsman you would think of as a Pro20 match-winner, but the left-hander played a typically skilful, busy innings, interspersed with big hitting as he collected three sixes but no fours in the Warriors' top score of 40 off 29 balls.

Prince came to the wicket when the Warriors were 30 for two in the seventh over and his brave innings was a lone stand against a top-class Eagles bowling effort, led by De Villiers, who was also the star bowler in the previous semifinal leg between the two teams.

De Villiers struck first in the fourth over when he bowled Justin Kreusch for eight and off-spinner Thandi Tshabalala, who opened the bowling in a surprise move by the Eagles, then bowled Arno Jacobs for 11 in the seventh over to bring Prince in.

Wickets continued to tumble around him, but the 31-year-old was numb to the pressures as he at least gave the Warriors something to bowl at.

Tshabalala was the other outstanding bowler for the Eagles, taking two for 25 in his four overs, while Dillon du Preez conceded just 19 runs in his four overs.
