West Indies collapse hands victory to Kiwis
New Zealand pulled off a truly stunning victory defending a total of just 124 to bet the West Indies by 7 runs after the hosts lost their last 6 wickets for just 19 runs. Having won the toss New Zealand batted first but they soon found themselves in deep trouble losing 6 wickets in the space of 7 overs managing to only score 37 runs. Having suffered a truly horrendous start the Kiwis were indebted to a brilliant innings by Ross Taylor who rescued the Kiwis with a superb half century. Supported by Jacob Oram (46) the pair helped the Kiwis reach 124-8 and even though no other batsmen reached double figures Taylor and Oram gave the Kiwis some sort of total to defend. In reply the West Indies made a fantastic start thanks to Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Chris Gayle. The pair built a first wicket partnership of 68 which set the foundations for an apparent victory. Even though they lost 4 wickets in the space of 2 overs Chanderpaul remained at the crease and despite tension starting to build there was no way the West Indies could lose needing just 26 runs with just under 4 overs remaining. Having recorded a wonderful half century Chanderpaul was dismissed by Bond in the 16th over and it was the pivitol moment in the match as Chanderpauls wicket sparked a massive collapse which saw 5 more wickets gone down. Sammy (2), D Ramdin (1), R Rampaul (0), Miller (4) and Fletcher (15) offered little resistants as the West Indies throw away victory in an amazing end to the game. |
