Muttiah Muralitharan ruled out of World Cup

Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan will miss the remainder of the Twenty20 World Cup after suffering groin injury..

The news will be a blow to last years beaten finalist who need to beat Zimbabwe today to stand any chance of qualifying for the Super Eight stage of the tournament.

Muralitharan picked up his injury during Sri Lankas two wicket defeat against New Zealand on Friday night.

The 38-year has been advised to rest for 2 3 weeks after suffering a grade one strain of his right adductor muscle.

Its a major blow to Sri Lankas chances of winning the World Cup, on slow turning wickets which have dominated the opening games Muralitharan would have played a major role for his team.

Sri Lanka has confirmed they will seek to bring in a replacement player to be confirmed by the National selectors.
