Australia on top as Ireland struggle with the bat

Australia took control of their opening t20 World Cup group match after their bowlers restricted Ireland to a total of just 123-7 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Kevin (35) and Niall (20) O’Brien gave the Irish hope with a 5th wicket stand of 52 but once Shane Watson (3-14) had struck twice in the 15th over to remove the brothers, the Aussies were fully on top.

Having won the toss, Ireland elected to bat first but the decision soon back fired after skipper William Porterfield was dismissed from the very first ball of the match by Shane Watson after he was caught by Mitchell Starc.

Paul Stirling (7) and Ed Joyce (16) quickly followed before the O’Brien brothers resistant’s at least gave the Irish bowlers a target which might prove defendable although the Aussies will feel confident of chasing it down with little fuss.
