Watson guides Australia to victory over Ireland
Shane Watson scored a quick fire half century to help Australia start their t20 World Cup campaign with a seven wicket victory against Ireland with four overs to spare at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Watson (51) smashed five boundaries and three sixes to help the Aussies overcome a potential tricky tie as they chased down Ireland’s total of 123-7 with ease.
David Warner added 26 during an opening stand of 60 with Watson and although the Irish thought back with three quick wickets, Cameron White (22) and skipper George Bailey (6) steered the Aussies home.
Having won the toss, Ireland elected to bat first but the decision soon back fired after skipper William Porterfield was dismissed from the very first ball of the match by Shane Watson after he was caught by Mitchell Starc.
Paul Stirling (7) and Ed Joyce (16) quickly followed before Kevin (35) and Niall (20) O’Brien gave the Irish hope with a 5th wicket stand of 52 but once Watson (3-14) had struck twice in the 15th over to remove the brothers, the Aussies were fully on top.
