Gayle and Samuels give the Windies the edge
Half centuries from Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels helped the West Indies record an imposing total of 191-8 against Australia in their t20 World Cup group match at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Gayle (54) led the way with a 26 ball half century which included five boundaries and four sixes after the early loss of Dwayne Smith (2) who was bowled by Mitchell Starc (3-35) in the 2nd over.
Johnson Charles (16) quickly followed by Gayle and Samuels (50) put the West Indies in control with a 3rd wicket stand of 46 before Gayle caught by Shane Watson (2-29) off his own bowling in the 11th over.
Samuels completed his own half century four overs later before he was caught by David Warner out on the boundary off the bowling of Brad Hogg to leave the West Indies 140-4 after 15.3 overs.
Despite the loss of Gayle and Samuels the West Indies continued to pressure the Aussie bowlers thanks to cameos from Dwayne Bravo (27) and Kieron Pollard (10) to leave Australia facing a run chase of 192.
