Sri Lanka strengthen their semi final hopes

Sri Lanka all but booked their place in the t20 World Cup semi finals after a comprehensive nine wicket victory against the West Indies at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

Faced with a victory target of just 130 Sri Lanka cruised to victory with 27 balls to spare thanks in part to skipper Mahela Jayawardene (65) who scored a half century to seal an empathic win in still.

Kumar Sangakkara (37) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (13) offered support as the Sri Lankanís raced to victory after they restricted the West Indies to a total of just 130.

The West Indies elected to bat first but their innings never got going despite a half century from Marlon Samuels who scored 50 runs from 35 balls to help his side record a total of just 129-5.

Despite Samuels and Dwayne Bravoís (40) contribution the West Indies were never able to control the game on a slow wicket which assisted the hostís spinners with Ajantha Mendis once again at his best with figures of 2-12.

Even the big hitting Chris Gayle struggled to get going, the opener scored just two runs from nine deliveries before he was dismissed by Nuwan Kulasekara (1-28) at the start of the 6th over.

Gayles opening partner, Johnson Charles fared no better as he scored just 12 runs from 21 balls during a power play which only 20 runs were scored as Sri Lanka took control early on.
