Pakistan strengthen semi final hopes after win
Pakistan strengthened their chances of securing a place in the t20 World Cup semi finals thanks to an impressive 32 run victory over Australia at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
The Pakistanis will now have to wait for the result of the groupís final match between India and South Africa later on tonight before they can celebrate.
If South Africa, who are now out of the tournament beat India, Pakistan will seal 2nd place in the group, if India win by a big margin they could leap frog above Pakistan and seal a semi final place themselves.
It proved to a be a perfect night for Pakistan, having set the Aussies a run chase of 150, the 2009 champions restricted Australia to a total of just 149-6 thanks to an impressive bowling display from Saeed Ajmal (3-17), Raza Hasan (2-14) and Mohammad Hafeez (2-22).
Shane Watson (8) failed with the bat for the first time in the tournament but a half century from Michael Hussey (54) ensured the stumbling Aussies scored 112 runs and guaranteed themselves a place in the semis.
A half century from Nasir Jamshed helped Pakistan record a total of 149-6; having lost the early wickets of Mohammad Hafeez (4) and Imran Nazir (14) looked in trouble before Nasir Jamshed (55) came to the crease and smashed four boundaries and two sixes before he was dismissed by Xavier Doherty (1-27).
Kamran Akmal (32) offered support during a vital 4th wicket partnership of 78 before Doherty made the break through for the Aussies in the 15 over to leave Pakistan 105-3.
The wicket keeper quickly followed as the Aussies took control once again to leave Pakistan with a total of 150 to defend in a game they must win to stand any chance of reaching the semi finals.
