Indian hopes fade despite Raina cameo
India’s hopes of reaching the t20 World Cup semi finals were left hanging by a thread after a lack lustre display with the bat against South Africa in their make or break Super Eights match at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Having watched on as Pakistan beat Australia by 32 runs, MS Dhoni’s side knew they would have to record a total of 160 plus to stand any chance of leap frogging above Pakistan and sneak into the semi finals.
As it stands India will have to bowl South Africa out for less then 121 after they recorded a below par total of 152-5 after they were put into bat by South Africa skipper AB de Villiers.
After a faltering start which saw the early loss of Gautam Gambhir (8) and Virat Kohli (2); India slowly fought the way back into the game thanks to Suresh Raina (45) and Rohit Sharma (25).
Yuvraj Singh (21), MS DHoni (23) and Virendr Sehwag (17) played minor roles to leave India needing to restrict South Africa to a total of less than 121 to stand any hope of reaching the Semi Finals for the first time since winning the tournament in 2007.
