Hawks hoping to temp Warne back

Aaron Moores | cricket20

The Hampshire Hawks have admitted they have spoken to Shane Warne about returning to the Rose Bowl to play in next summers Friends Provident P20 tournament.

Warne captained the Hawks between 2004 and 2007 leading them into Division One of the County Championship but his greatest achievement as a captain was in the IPL winning the inaugural title with the Rajasthan Royals in 2008.

A return for Warne to the Rose Bowl could help the Hawks chances of qualifying for the second Twenty20 Champions League. Warne would be unavailable for selection by the Hawks however if the Royals qualified for the tournament too.

"Warne is the biggest name we've ever had at the club and, yes, we have spoken to him," Hampshire's chairman, Rod Bransgrove, told the Daily Mail. "You can never rule out getting Shane Warne back to Hampshire."

Next seasons Friends Provident P20 tournament replaces the Twenty20 Cup. The 18 counties will be split into two groups of 9 and each team will be allowed to play four overseas players.
