The Cape Cobras kick started their t20 Champions League with an impressive seven wicket victory over the New South Wales Blues with 2.4 hours to spare at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Faced with a victory target of 136, the Cobras chased down their target in impressive style thanks to an opening stand of 88 between Herschelle Gibbs (55) and Richard Levi (43).
The openers saw off an experienced Blues attack which saw Nathan Hauritz (0-25) conceded 25 runs from just two overs as the Cobras quickly took control of the match.
Despite the loss of Levi and Owais Shah (3) in quick succession, Gibbs and JP Dumniy steered the South African’s to victory against a disappointing Blues side who failed to keep Levi and Gibbs quiet with the bat.
Having won the toss, the Australian recorded a total of just 135-8 despite reaching 82-2 at the start of the 10th over after David Warner (20) and Shane Watson (34) had got the Blues off to a rapid start.
Charl Langeveldt (2-38) and Virnon Philander (2-21) led the fight back to restrict the Blues to a below total which was easily chaseable on a good batting track.
