The Chennai Super Kings t20 Champions League defence got off to the worst possible start after they suffered a three wicket defeat against the Mumbai Indians thanks to some stunning batting from Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh.

Faced with a victory target of 159, the Indians had slumped to a total of just 106-7 after the loss of Kieron Pollard (22) in the 16th over but, with defeat starring them in their face, Malinga and Harbhajan shared an unbelievable 8th wicket stand of 53 to seal a stunning victory.

Malinga lead the way, smashing 37 runs from just 18 balls, including three boundaries and three sixes while Harbhajan enjoyed a cameo of 19 to help the Indians sell a truly amazing victory.

The day started off on a brighter note for the Super Kings after Michael Hussey scored an impressive 81 to help the defending champion’s record a total of 158-4 on a slow wicket.

MS Dhoni (22) and Suresh Raina (18) offered support as the Super Kings looked set to start their title defence with a victory, especially after they had reduced the Indians to just 63-5.

Pollard led the Indians comeback but once he departed nobody inside the ground would have expected Malinga and Harbhajan to record a record braking 8th wicket stand to snatch victory away from Dhoni’s team.
