Melbourne Stars opening batsman Rob Quiney was in explosive form to help the Stars cruise to an impressive 8 run victory over the Brisbane Heat in front of a record crowd at the Gabba in Brisbane.
Almost 30,000 fans watched Quiney smash five boundaries and six sixes during an impressive 60 ball innings which saw him score 97 runs before he was dismissed by Ryan Harris in the final over.
David Hussey added 45 runs during a 3rd wicket stand of 105 with Quiney as the Stars took control of the game after the early loss of Matthew Wade (5) and George Bailey (10).
With Quiney leading the way the Stars posted a total of 177-7 which proved to mush for the Heat to chase down despite an encouraging start by Brendon McCullum (36) and Matthew Hayden (22).
The pair recorded an opening stand of 39 before Hayden was dismissed by Clint McKay (3-22) in the 4th over; McCullum continued to lead the attack but once he was bowled by Shane Warner (1-22) four overs later the Heat’s challenge faded.
With wickets falling at regular intervals the home side slipped further and further behind the required run rate thanks to some tight bowling from McKay and James Faulkner (1-36).
Michael Neser (30) and Ryan Harris (25) offered some resistance but it wasn’t enough as the Heat slumped to a total of just 169-7 to lose their second straight game.
