The Melbourne Renegades kick started their stuttering KFC Big Bash League campaign thanks to a thrilling six run victory against the Sydney Thunder at Stadium Australia in Sydney.
Having lost their previous two games the Renegades came into the match in dire need of victory and even though the dangerous Chris Gayle (75) topped scored for the Thunder, the visitors held on to record a much needed win.
Faced with a victory target of 141, the Thunder seemed on course for victory thanks to Gayle who lead the home side with another blistering display of batting which saw him smashed three boundaries and five sixes.
Despite having no support Gayle helped the Thunder reach 101-1 in the 15th over but with victory insight the home side suffered a top order collapse after Usman Khawaja (17) was dismissed by Shahid Afridi (3-21).
Daniel Smith (3), Ben Dunk (3) and Luke Butterworth (1) quickly followed and once Gayle was dismissed by Shane Harwood (2-26) in the penultimate over the task was to large for Jason Floros (6) and Sean Abbott (4).
Having won the toss the Renegades looked on course for a big total thanks to an opening stand of 82 between Aaron Finch (41) and Brad Hodge (44) who smashed nine boundaries and two sixes.
Once the pair had been dismissed by Luke Doran (2-26) in the 11th over, the Renegades top order quickly collapsed to leave the Thunder facing a small run chase.
Glenn Maxwell (10), Shahid Afridi (16), Nathan Reardon (4), Abdul Razzaq (13), Andrew McDonald (0) and Graham Manou (2) were all dismissed cheaply to leave the visitors 140-8.
