New Zealand survived an early scare to maintain their dominance over Zimbabwe thanks to an seven wicket victory at Eden Park to take the lead in their two game t20 International Series.
Faced with a victory target of 160, the Kiwis slumped to just 15-2 before Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson smashed the home side to victory thanks to an astonishing 3rd wicket stand of 137.
Guptill lead the way with a quick fire 91 which included five boundaries and six sixes as the opener savage the Zimbabweans bowling attack after Kyle Jarvis (2-38) had picked up the wickets of Ron Nicol (12) and Brendon McCullum (0) in the 2nd over.
Williamson (48) offered support to help the Kiwis cruised to victory with 19 deliveries to spare to take a 1-0 series lead ahead of their second game at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Tuesday evening.
Having lost their one off Test and ODI series 3-0, Zimbabwe bounced back with a much better performance at Eden Park, the tourists recorded a competitive total of 159-8 thanks in part to a well deserved half century from Hamilton Masakadza (53).
Elton Chigumbura enjoyed a cameo of 48 which included four sixes to leave New Zealand facing a tricky run chance but despite reducing the home side to just 15-2 the Zimbabwe were unable to increase the pressure thanks to Guptill.
