Irfan Pathan made sure the Delhi DareDevils get their IPL campaign off to a flying start thanks to a commanding eight wicket victory against the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Garden.
Faced with a victory target of just 98, the DareDevils were floundering with the score 57-2 with 7.2 overs gone before Pathan smashed a quick fire 42 which included three sixes to seal victory with five balls to spare.
After more then a two hour rain delay the match has been reduced to a 12 over a side match which saw the DareDevils reduce the home to just 20-3 inside the opening three overs.
Having batted first, the Knight Riders were restricted to a total of just 97-9 thanks in part to some fine bowling from Morne Morkel (3-18) who picked up the early wickets of Jacques Kallis (4) and Manoj Tiwary (0).
Roelof van der Merwe (2-28) and Umesh Yadav chipped in with two wickets a piece as the Knight Riders middle order collapse in spectacular fashion.
With wickets falling at regular intervals it was left to Laxmi Shukla to offer the home fans something to cheer about with a quick fire 27 with included two sixes to leave the DareDevils facing a victory target of just 98.
