Dwayne Bravo smashed a six off the last ball of the match to seal a thrilling five wicket victory for the Chennai Super Kings over the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens to strengthen their chances of reaching the IPL playoffs.

With five runs needed off the final ball of the match, Bravo (11) smashed Rajat Bhatia (2-33) for a six over the long on boundary to spark wild celebrations in the defending champions dug out.

With the tension building and just nine runs required from the last over the Super Kings looked in pole position to seal victory but Bhatia bowled superbly, conceding just four runs and picking up the wicket of MS Dhoni (28) with his second delivery.

Despite almost being stumped from the penultimate ball of the match, Bravo kept his cool to seal victory and kept the Super Kings in the hunt for a place in the play offs.

Faced with a target of 159 the Super Kings got off to a good start thanks to Michael Hussey (56) and Murali Vijay (36) who shared an opening stand of 97 before Hussey was dismissed by Sunil Narine (2-14) in the 11th over.

Vijay, Suresh Raina (8) and Faf du Plessis (13) quickly followed before Dhoni and Dwayne Bravo steered the Super Kings towards victory to deny the Knight Riders the chance to move back to the top of the group standings.

It proved to be a disappointing day for the home side who only posted a total of 158-6 despite Gautam Gambhir (56) and Brendon McCullum (36) sharing an opening stand of 99.

With the partnership broken in the 12th over by Shadab Jakati (2-26) the Super Kings took control of the match by picking up five more wickets to restrict the home side to a below par total.
