Richard Levi and Hashim Amla helped South Africa romp to a crushing ten wicket victory to get their t20 World Cup campaign off to the perfect start against Zimbabwe at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Hambantota.
Faced with a victory target of 94, Levi (50) and Amla (32) made light work of Zimbabwe’s bowlers to seal victory with seven overs to spare to knock Brendan Taylor’s side out of the tournament after another poor performance.
Jaques Kallis (4-15) led the way with four wickets as the South African seamers tore through a weak Zimbabwean batting line up to leave the Protea’s needing to chase a total of just 93-8.
Having been put into bat by AB de Villiers, Zimbabwe lost Vusi Sibanda (0) and Taylor (4) inside the opening three overs as the Protea’s took control of the match early on.
Hamilton Masakadza (6) quickly followed and by the time Kallis picked up two wickets in the space of two deliveries in the 11th over Zimbabwe had slumped to 51-5 in a game they had to win in order to remain in the tournament.
With wickets falling around him Craig Ervine offered the most resistant but even his cameo of 37 won’t be enough to stop South Africa claiming their first victory in the group stages.
