The Sydney Sixers started their KFC Big Bash title defence with an easy seven wicket victory over their city rivals the Sydney Thunder in front a disappointing crowd at the SCG in Sydney.

With a sell out expected only 15,279 fans turned up to watch Brad Haddin (59) lead the Big Bash and Champions League winners to a simple victory against a Thunder side who didn’t really worry the SIxers.

Haddin and Steven Smith (41) shared a 3rd wicket stand of 83 to help the Sixers chase down the Thunders total of 143-5 with eight balls to spare despite the loss of Haddin in the penultimate over.

Having set a small total the Thunders bowlers were unable to keep the Sixers out of the game thanks in part to poor performances from Sean Abbott (1-40) and Gurinder Sandhu (0-35) who both conceded over 10 runs an over.
