The Melbourne Renegades cruised into the Big Bash semi-finals thanks to a nine wicket thrashing of the Melbourne Stars in a one sided Melbourne derby at the MCG in Melbourne.
The Renegades became the first team to seal a place in the semi-finals and will play at home after guaranteeing top spot in the Big Bash League thanks to a simple victory over their city rivals.
Having been set a victory target of 147, Aaron Finch (67) and Peter Nevill (24) saw the Renegades home with seven balls to spare thanks to a second wicket stand of 27.
Alex Doolan (30) and Finch got the run chase off to the perfect start with an opening stand of 70 and even though the Renegades lost Marlon Samuels (17) to injury in the 13th over after he was hit on the head by a bouncer from Lasith Malinga the visitors cruised home.
It proved to be a disappointing day for the Stars who suffered another defeat which leaves their hopes of reaching the semi finals hanging in the balance after they failed to defend a total of 146-9.
Luke Wright (29) and David Hussey led the way but with wickets falling at regular intervals the Stars failed to post a competitive total to stop the Renegades from securing victory.
