PCB promises flawless Cup

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will boost security to make the ABN-AMRO Twenty20 Cup cricket tournament, getting underway here on Thursday (today) an action-packed and flawless event for cricket fans of the metropolis.

Blackcaps newcomer Peter McGlashan is enthusiastic about his forthcoming debut against Sri Lanka in The National Bank International Twenty20 at Wellington’s Westpac Stadium.

Wicketkeeper/batsman McGlashan starred on his maiden Twenty20 appearance for State Northern Knights in last season’s domestic competition, striking 94 from only 49 balls at the Basin Reserve earlier this year.

He will make his international debut across town at the Westpac Stadium and is hoping for a similar performance, with his stroke-making batting style likely to fit into the Blackcaps Twenty20 side. McGlashan said: “It’s a great game because it brings in the best parts of the One-Day game, so instead of a One-Day game, where there may be a few dead periods in the middle, you’re really under pressure for the whole game.

“While its quite a new thing domestically, we only got a few games last year – obviously, the international boys got a few more than anyone in New Zealand – it’s a format that worked really well when I was in England last year, so hopefully it will take off this weekend.” McGlashan, whose sister Sara is a current White Fern and grandfather Robin Schofield kept wicket for Central Districts, will step into the home team with Brendon McCullum likely to open the innings.

The selectors gave recalls to Andre Adams, Peter Fulton, Mark Gillespie, James Marshall, Jeetan Patel and Ross Taylor. Jacob Oram, Kyle Mills, Scott Styris and Gareth Hopkins were all unavailable through injury. Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene has already acknowledged he shares McGlashan’s lack of game time on the international Twenty20 circuit.

He said: “I played my first international against England and it’s quite exciting. As a player, it’s something new - that’s something we always have to get used to. We can have a bit of fun and its something cricketers can have a bit of fun with. It’s a short version of the one day game and its something where you can try new things and see if they come off. It’s very quick and you have to make decisions very quickly. The one international game we played we enjoyed it.”

Experienced all-rounder Marvan Atapattu may come into contention having missed The National Bank Test series. Kumar Sangakkara, who was in fine form in the two-Test series, will replace Prasanna Jayawardene behind the stumps as the ‘keeper has appendicitis. All-rounders Malinga Bandara and Ruchira Perera are expected to join the team for Boxing Day’s second National Bank Twenty20 at Eden Park.
