Tripura thrash sorry Assam
Tripura pulled off an upset seven-wicket victory over Assam in their opening East Zone Twenty20 match at the Eden Gardens.
The star of the day was Ansul Lamba, who thrashed the Assam bowlers and helped Tripura overhaul Assam's 82 in 14.3 overs.
Assam batted first and Tripura bowlers took advantage of the early morning dew. At 23 for 4, Assam never looked like making it. The innings folded up for 82 with only Arun Kumar (31) and Gakul Sharma (22) shinning with their willow.
None of the other batsmen showed any form and M. Kalita was the only other batsman to reach double figures scoring 12.
For Tripura, Vinit, Manoj, Tushar and Rajib took two wickets each.
Tripura answered in a gamely manner and opening bat Lamba, who remained not out on 48 off 47 balls with eight hits to the fence, stole the show. Manoj gave him good company remaining not out on 14. Assam tried to come back taking three quick wickets reducing Tripura to 34 for three, but the duo ensured no further jitters.
They notched up 82 with 5.3 overs to spare.
Tripura now have four points, like Assam, but with one game advantage.
On Tuesday, hosts Bengal defeated Assam by 35 runs in their opening tie of the East Zone Twenty20 at the Eden Gardens here.
