Surgery ends Mahmood hopes

Lancashire seamer Sajid Mahmood's hopes of breaking back into the England team for the remaining two tests against West Indies have disappeared after it was announced on Saturday that he is to undergo surgery.

Mahmood, who last played for England in the fifth Ashes test in Australia in January, is to have a double hernia operation on Tuesday and is unlikely to play again for five to six weeks, his county said on their Web site.

That rules him out of the third test on his home Old Trafford ground, which starts on June 7, and the fourth from June 15, as well as two Twenty20 internationals and three one-dayers.

The injury comes at an unfortunate time for Mahmood, who has been bowling well for Lancs and played in the drawn county match with Sussex which ended on Saturday.

England are also without his Lancashire team mate Andrew Flintoff, who has undergone ankle surgery. They will name their team on Sunday for the third test.
