Yorkshire eye quarter final spot

Yorkshire Phoenix beat North Division leaders Nottinghamshire Outlaws by eight wickets in a five-overs thrash to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the quarter-final draw in the Twenty20 Cup.

Play finally got under way at 7.59pm after showers prevented a revised start time of 6.40pm and then an 11-overs match at 7.20pm.

Nottinghamshire, put in to bat, opened their innings in bright sunshine but they lost a wicket to Jason Gillespie's fifth ball, which Will Jefferson lofted to Andrew Gale at mid-on.

Tim Bresnan then claimed a wicket with his second delivery when Stephen Fleming wafted outside off stump and was caught behind, but Samit Patel hit his first ball high over backward square-leg for six.

There was another six for Patel who drove David Wainwright over long-on but in trying to repeat the shot off the next ball he gave a towering catch to Gale and Nottinghamshire were 24 for three.

The six hits continued as David Hussey and Chris Read each took maximums off Anthony McGrath in an over which cost him 20 runs and there were 17 runs from the final over from Darren Gough.

Hussey finished on 26 from 12 balls and Read closed with 15 off just four deliveries, striking two fours and a six.

Yorkshire made an excellent start to their reply, Craig White striking Simon Francis' first ball for four and there were four leg-byes off the next. Later in the over Brophy hooked his first delivery to the rope.

White launched a furious attack on Gareth Clough, blasting two fours and a six off his first three balls and, with two overs gone, Yorkshire were 33 without loss.

The run spree continued with White picking up Hussey over mid-wicket for six and then hitting him for four before he was taken on the boundary edge by Patel for 31 off 11 balls with four fours and two sixes.

McGrath was caught at cover off his first ball and at the end of Hussey's over Yorkshire were 45 for two but Brophy and Jacques Rudolph saw them home with two balls to spare.
