Rain ruins the party again

Leicestershire, the defending Twenty20 Cup champions hopes of qualification hang in the balance after their game at Old Trafford against Lancashire was called of at 16:20.

The Leicestershire's Foxes chances of progressing to the quarter finals are hanging in the balance after their game tonight was called off at Old Trafford with water still lying on the outfield Old Trafford following several days of heavy rain.

Its a serve blow to the Foxes who will now have to rely on other teams losing to keep their record of qualifying for every Finals Day alive.

Last year's runners-up Nottinghamshire, whose last group game against Durham was also rained off, have already qualified, as have Sussex and Warwickshire - with the final round of group matches taking place tonight.

In the North, Yorkshire Phoenix could make the last eight should they beat Derbyshire Phantoms at Headingley Carnegie.

In the South, which has proved the tightest group, Middlesex Crusaders will have to beat Essex Eagles at Lord's to stand any chance of progress. The winners of the Surrey Brown Caps v Kent Spitfires match at The Brit Oval will secure the second automatic spot alongside the Sharks.

The Bears, who qualified first, will be joined in the next stage from Midlands/West/Wales by either Gloucestershire Gladiators, who have a home tie against Glamorgan's Dragons, or Northampton Steelbacks, who will need to take points from Somerset Sabres.

Worcestershire Royals could still make the cut should they beat the Bears at Edgbaston and the Gladiators and Steelbacks both lose.

The top two teams from each group automatically qualify together with the two highest-scoring third placed teams.

In the event of a tie-break, the following conditions apply (playing condition 6.7.4):

a) Most wins in Group Matches
b) If still equal, the team with the higher net run rate in the Group Matches will be placed in the higher position.
c) If still equal, the team with the higher number of wickets taken per balls bowled in the Group Matches in which the results were achieved will be placed in the higher position.
d) In the event that the teams cannot be separated by (a) to (c) above, this will be done by drawing lots.

The quarter-final draw will take place tonight, live on Sky Sports Naws between 21:00 and 22:00, after all the matches have concluded. One quarter-final will be played on Tuesday July 17, the other three quarter-finals will be played on Wednesday July 18.
