Fleming omitted from Twenty20 squad

New Zealand Test captain Stephen Fleming has been left out of their squad for next month's world Twenty20.

Fleming stood down as one-day skipper after the World Cup and the man tipped to succeed him, Daniel Vettori, will lead the Black Caps in South Africa.

Uncapped duo Nathan McCullum, brother of keeper Brendon, and Bradley Scott have been named in the 15-man line-up.

Gareth Hopkins, who played five ODIs in 2004, has been recalled to act as the back-up wicket-keeper/batsman.

Fleming, who is currently playing in England with Nottinghamshire, stood down from his one-day role to concentrate on his Test career.

And Bracewell believes the team needs to make a fresh start under Vettori.

"This is the first opportunity for Daniel to captain the team abroad and we wanted to ensure that Daniel and the team were not looking to Stephen for leadership," he explained.

"We also thought it would be a good opportunity for Stephen to remain with Nottinghamshire to build towards the longer forms of the game."

Of Hopkins, Bracewell added: "Gareth had an excellent A tour to Australia and demonstrated good ability with the bat, particularly in the later stages of the game.

"Gareth gets under the ball and hits it a long way. With their complementary skills we are not going to lose anything if both Brendon and Gareth play in the same match."

New Zealand squad: Daniel Vettori (capt), Shane Bond, Peter Fulton, Mark Gillespie, Gareth Hopkins, Chris Martin, Craig McMillan, Brendon McCullum, Nathan McCullum, Jacob Oram, Jeetan Patel, Bradley Scott, Scott Styris, Ross Taylor, Lou Vincent.
