Pomersbach gets late Twenty20 call up

Late drama has seen West Australian batsman Luke Pomersbach called up to play for Australia in the Twenty20 international against New Zealand in Perth after Brad Hodge injured his back.

Despite the 23-year-old still being banned from the WA first team, after a late night drinking session last month, Australian selectors made the decision after Hodge's misfortune.

The Victorian injured his back in the WACA ground dressing room ninety minutes before for the game, necessitating the emergency measure from coach Tim Nielsen and selectors.

Pomersbach, who has two centuries for WA against touring sides, almost scored a third against the Kiwis in the Lilac Hill festival match on Friday.

He was in the WACA car park with his girlfriend when he got the call he would be playing his first game for Australia.

Pomersbach then had to ring his brother to ask him to bring his cricket gear to the venue.

Australia's first time captain Michael Clarke won the toss and chose to bat, despite rain earlier in the day.

Stuart Clark was made Australia's twelfth man, while Chris Martin was the man to miss out for the Black Caps.

Australia: Michael Clarke (capt), Adam Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds, Mike Hussey, Luke Pomersbach, Adam Voges, Ashley Noffke, Brett Lee, Nathan Bracken, Shaun Tait, Mitchell Johnson, Stuart Clark (12th man).

New Zealand: Daniel Vettori (capt), Scott Styris, Ross Taylor, Lou Vincent, Mathew Sinclair, Jacob Oram, Kyle Mills, Jamie How, Mark Gillespie, Jeetan Patel, Brendon McCullum, Chris Martin (12th man).
